According to a report in The Hindu, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) revealed in response to a Right to Information (RTI) request that approximately 11.5 crore PAN cards were deactivated overall because they weren't connected to Aadhaar cards before the deadline.

PAN and Aadhaar must be linked by Income Tax regulations. The 30th of June 2023 was the deadline for connecting Aadhaar and PAN.  Only 57.25 crore of India's 70.24 crore PAN card holders have linked their cards to Aadhaar.

11.r Crore PAN Cards deactivated

Aadhaar has not been linked to more than 12 crore PAN cards, 11.5 crore of which have been deactivated. RTI responded to the daily, citing Madhya Pradesh activist Chandra Shekhar Gaur. But the response also mentioned that Rs. 1,000 in fines could be paid to reactivate these Aadhaar.

Every person who is eligible to receive an Aadhaar number and has been assigned a Permanent Account Number (PAN) as of July 1, 2017, is required by section 139AA of the Income Tax Act to notify Aadhaar in the format and way specified. Consequently, before the specified deadline, these individuals must  link their Aadhaar and PAN.
