In a recent development, three individuals with ties to the Khalistan movement faced sentencing in Auckland for their involvement in a plot to harm Harnek Singh, a prominent radio host known for his vocal opposition to Khalistani ideology. The sentencing took place following a meticulous legal process that shed light on the disturbing incident.

Sarvjeet Sidhu, 27, admitted guilt to attempted murder, while Sukhpreet Singh, 44, was convicted as an accessory. The third individual, a 48-year-old Auckland resident with an interim name suppression order, was identified as the mastermind behind the attack. The plot, which occurred on December 23, 2020, involved a group of religious fundamentalists ambushing Harnek Singh in his driveway, inflicting over 40 stab wounds.

During the sentencing, Judge Mark Woolford underscored the importance of community protection and the necessity for a robust deterrent against religious fanaticism. The judge described the attack as bearing "all the hallmarks of religious fanaticism," emphasizing the need for a different sentencing approach to ensure community safety.

Harnek Singh, also known as Nekki, survived the attack, thanks to swift action in locking himself inside his vehicle and alerting neighbors. The assault left him with extensive injuries, requiring over 350 stitches and multiple surgeries for recovery.

In court, details emerged about the resentment harbored by the mastermind against Harnek Singh due to the radio host's outspoken stance against Khalistani movement. Avtar Singh, a former associate of the mastermind, labeled him a "thug" and "mafia" in 2018, highlighting the divisive nature of their relationship.

The victim impact statement read in court conveyed Harnek Singh's ongoing fear for his family's safety. Despite the chilling attempt on his life, Harnek Singh affirmed his commitment to expressing his opinions and beliefs, asserting that the attackers' message of intimidation had failed.

The mastermind, whose identity is currently under suppression, received a 13-and-a-half-year sentence, with a minimum imprisonment period of nine years before parole eligibility. Sarvjeet Sidhu was sentenced to nine-and-a-half years, while Sukhpreet Singh received six months of home detention.

It's worth noting that two individuals were acquitted due to insufficient evidence, while two others await sentencing early next year for their involvement in the attempted murder plot. The case highlights the complex interplay between religious ideologies and freedom of expression in New Zealand.
