Seven Kashmiri students from the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) have been arrested by the Jammu and Kashmir Police under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). The arrests were made in connection to alleged instances of anti-India sloganeering and celebrations of India's loss in the World Cup 2023 final against Australia on November 19.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police defended their actions, citing the use of a "softer provision" of the anti-terror law, specifically section 13 of the UAPA. Authorities clarified that the incident went beyond mere pro-Pakistan slogans, stating that such expressions were intended to intimidate dissenters and identify individuals who chose to distance themselves.

Criticism of the police intervention came from the National Conference (NC) and People's Democratic Party (PDP). However, the police asserted that written complaints supported their stance, emphasizing that the incident aimed at instilling fear in those holding pro-India sentiments or opposing Pakistan.

The Congress, on the other hand, welcomed the police action, with J&K Congress Working President Raman Bhalla emphasizing the need for strict measures against those engaged in anti-national activities.

Kashmiri Students threatening other students for supporting India

The arrests were prompted by a complaint filed by a non-local student from Punjab, alleging abuse and threats by the accused Kashmiri students for supporting Team India. The complainant asserted that the students had not only celebrated India's defeat but also chanted pro-Pakistan slogans, creating an atmosphere of fear among non-local students.

Former J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed disagreement with the students' actions while also criticizing the police handling of the case. Abdullah argued that although he did not endorse the students' behavior, the police response contradicted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 2021 announcement to bridge the emotional and geographical gaps with Jammu and Kashmir. Abdullah contended that the police approach would not contribute to reducing the emotional distance as envisioned by the Prime Minister.
