Sonam Wangchuk: The  politics has once again heated up in the country, after the  Sonam Wangchuk was taken into police custody. The opposition is attacking this decision of the central government. From Congress to AAP, everyone has come out in support of Sonam. Meanwhile, Sonam, who was detained at the Delhi border, started an indefinite hunger strike at the police station where he has been kept.

About 120 people from Ladakh, including climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who marched to the national capital demanding Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh, have been detained by the Delhi Police on the city border. The people detained including Wangchuk have been taken to Alipur and other police stations bordering the city. According to the information, Sonam Wangchuk has been kept in Bawana police station.

Who is Sonam Wangchuk?

In the meanwhile here, we let know, who is he. Sonam Wangchuk is a engineer, education reformer and environmentalist. Even though Sonam, was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award in the year 2018. He was given this award for his contribution in the field of education, culture and nature. He has always been raising his voice for the people of Ladakh. He once sat on a dharna in the snow demanding inclusion of Ladakh in the Sixth Schedule.

Sonam Wangchuk's demand? 

All though Sonam has been demanding inclusion of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh separate union territories Ladakh in the Sixth Schedule and giving it the status of a state since 2019. With this demand, he is leading the 'Delhi Chalo Padyatra' which started from Leh a month ago. The padyatra was organised by the 'Leh Apex Body', which along with the 'Kargil Democratic Alliance' has been leading the movement for the last four years demanding statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, early recruitment process along with a Public Service Commission for Ladakh and separate Lok Sabha seats for Leh and Kargil districts..

Why does police take Sonam Wangchuk into custody?

In Delhi Section 163 of BNSS has been imposed. This section will remain in force in many areas of the city for the next 6 days. During this time, protests have been banned. Regarding this, the Delhi Police asked Sonam Wangchuk to go back, but when he did not stop, the policemen already deployed on the border took about 120 people including Wangchuk into custody. Political rhetoric started as soon as they were taken into custody.
