Abolition of Polygamy in Assam, Guwahati : CM of Assam Himanta Biswa shed light on the plan for the the upcoming election as well as the plan of State government to abolish Polygamy in the state and bring UCC in the state.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to embark on a pivotal visit to Assam on April 6, announced Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, as the state gears up for the Lok Sabha elections. Sarma disclosed this development on Friday, highlighting the significance of Shah's visit and shedding light on the upcoming electoral landscape.

During his visit, Shah is slated to address two election rallies in Lakhimpur and Hojai, both falling under the Kaziranga parliamentary constituency. The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of these rallies in bolstering the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) election campaign across the state, especially as Assam braces for a three-phase Lok Sabha election.
Election campaigns started
Speaking about the BJP's campaign strategy, Sarma noted that candidates have already initiated their election campaigns, actively engaging with voters at the grassroots level. He underscored the party's focus on a socio-economic survey, aimed at identifying beneficiaries of government schemes and ensuring inclusivity.
Sarma expressed confidence in the BJP and its allies, predicting victory in 11 out of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam. He highlighted key battlegrounds and anticipated tough fights, particularly in Karimganj and Nagaon, where the AIUDF poses a challenge.
Ban Polygamy in Assam and bring UCC
Moreover, Sarma outlined post-election plans, asserting the state government's intent to ban polygamy in Assam following the conclusion of the Lok Sabha polls. Responding to queries about the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), he indicated that resolution of certain issues would precede any decision, with plans to address them post-election.

The Lok Sabha elections in Assam are scheduled across three phases on April 19, April 26, and May 7, coinciding with the nationwide electoral process spanning seven phases beginning April 19. With nearly 97 crore eligible voters, the general election holds significant implications for the political landscape of the country. Vote counting is slated for June 4, marking the culmination of this democratic exercise.
