Adipurush director Om Raut has defended the film's box office performance, stating that the Prabhas-starrer was not a flop, despite facing heavy criticism. In a recent interview, Raut described Prabhas as "flop-proof," emphasizing that the actor's popularity ensures strong box office numbers, regardless of negative feedback. "Ups and downs cannot affect them because the audience’s love for them is beyond comprehension," Raut said.

Box Office Numbers Tell a Different Story

Raut revealed that Adipurush earned over ₹400 crore worldwide, dismissing claims that the film failed commercially. He acknowledged that while the movie faced backlash, it still managed to generate significant revenue. "Our first day was ₹70 crore, and that’s just in India. Our total box office was over ₹400 crore. So, the numbers were very large," Raut explained.

The Perception Issue: What Went Wrong?

According to Raut, the main issue was not the film’s revenue but the negative perception it garnered. He believes that if the public's perception had been more positive, the box office numbers could have been even higher. "There was a loss of perception, not a loss of revenue. If the perception was positive, we would’ve seen an exorbitant number, which we did not see. That was disappointing," he added.

Audience Backlash and Supreme Court Involvement

Adipurush, which was released on June 16, 2023, is based on the Hindu epic Ramayana. Despite its grand scale, the film faced severe backlash for allegedly distorting the epic. Many viewers were disappointed with the portrayal of key characters like Ravana and Lord Hanuman, and the controversial dialogues added to the criticism. Even after changes were made to the dialogue, the negative sentiment persisted. A plea was even filed in the Supreme Court to revoke the film's CBFC certification, but it was rejected.

Kriti Sanon’s Reaction to the Criticism

Kriti Sanon, who played the role of Sita in Adipurush, expressed her sorrow over the criticism the film received. In an interview, she admitted that the backlash left her deeply saddened. “You feel a deep sadness and might even find yourself in tears, wondering what went wrong,” Kriti shared. She added, “The goal is never to hurt anyone’s feelings; the intention behind every project is always positive. However, we must face the reality that sometimes things just don’t click, and it’s crucial to learn from these experiences.”
