AU in G20

African Union is about the attain the membership status of G20 coalition. African Union attends G20 in the capacity of invited international organization. Although the African country South Africa was  member of G20, no other African country was part of the coalition.

With the position of member of G20, African Union will stand on the same position on European Union. African Union has a total number of 55 member states.

The official confirmation s yet awaited. According to media reports, this membership will be in place from next year onwards when Brazil assumes leadership of G20 replacing India.

The move to include the AU has not encountered opposition within the G20, with one source indicating unanimous support while maintaining anonymity due to government regulations. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had proposed this change, authoring an article in various Indian and international publications, advocating for the AU's full, permanent membership in the G20 during the upcoming summit in India's capital.

Currently, the G20 comprises 19 nations and the European Union, collectively representing a substantial share of the global economy, trade, and population.

South Africa, a G20 member, and an advocate for AU admission, refrained from immediate comment ahead of the Delhi summit. Vincent Magwenya, a spokesperson for the South African presidency, stated they would withhold comments until an official announcement or post-summit developments. Meanwhile, the South African foreign ministry welcomed reports of the G20's willingness to grant the African bloc membership on par with the EU, indicating their support for this endeavor.

The decision to include the AU as a member is expected to be officially announced during the G20 summit, as reported by Bloomberg. Notably, countries like Germany, Brazil, South Africa, and Canada have also expressed their support for the African Union's inclusion.
