Balochistan Liberation Army claims responsibility
The attack was claimed by the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist group fighting for Balochistan’s independence. According to the Pakistan Army, the group used an IED to target the military vehicle.
Senior officers among the dead
Among those killed were Special Operations Commander Tariq Imran and Subedar Umar Farooq. The army said it is now clearing the area to find and eliminate any other terrorists hiding nearby.
Past attacks by BLA
The BLA has carried out many such attacks in the past. In March, the group hijacked the Jaffar Express train, which was traveling from Quetta to Peshawar. That incident killed 21 civilians and four soldiers.
Ongoing violence in Balochistan
Violence has continued in Balochistan for over 20 years. Many local ethnic Baloch groups say the federal government is using the province's natural resources without giving fair benefits to the local people.
Just last week, Pakistani security forces killed 10 terrorists in two separate actions in the Kech and Ziarat districts as part of an anti-militant operation.
