The 16th BRICS Summit is set to take place on October 22-23, 2024, in the Russian city of Kazan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Russia to attend the event. This will mark his second visit to Russia this year; he previously visited Moscow in July for the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit.

Key Agenda and Bilateral Talks

During the BRICS Summit, PM Modi is expected to meet with leaders from BRICS member nations, which include Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, as well as other invited global leaders. These meetings will focus on strengthening cooperation and discussing pressing global issues.

In addition to the summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin has extended an invitation to PM Modi for a bilateral meeting on October 22. The meeting will be aimed at reviewing the progress of their previous agreements and outlining future prospects. President Putin referred to PM Modi as a “good friend” and expressed his eagerness for the upcoming discussions.

Summit Theme and Focus Areas

The theme of the 16th BRICS Summit is "Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security." According to a statement from India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the summit will serve as a platform for leaders to address key global issues. It will also offer an opportunity to evaluate the progress of various BRICS initiatives and explore new areas for collaboration.

History of BRICS

The BRICS group, which originally included Brazil, Russia, India, and China (BRIC), held its first meeting in 2006 in St Petersburg, Russia. After a series of high-level discussions, the first official BRIC Summit was held in 2009 in Yekaterinburg, Russia. In September 2010, South Africa was included as a full member, and the group was renamed BRICS.
