The bail hearing for Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, a Hindu priest in Bangladesh accused of sedition, has been rescheduled for January 2, 2025. This delay occurred after no defence lawyer appeared in court during the scheduled hearing on Tuesday. The decision to reschedule was announced by Chattogram Metropolitan Session Judge Saiful Islam, citing the absence of the defence attorney as the reason.

Attack on Defence Lawyer

The case took a troubling turn when Raman Roy, the lawyer initially representing Das, was attacked at his residence, allegedly by Islamist extremists. Reports indicate that Roy is currently in the ICU with serious injuries, making it impossible for him to continue with the case. This incident has discouraged other lawyers from stepping forward to represent Das, further complicating the proceedings.

Heightened Security at the Court

Before the hearing, authorities implemented enhanced security measures at the Chattogram court premises. Additional police officers were deployed, and law enforcement maintained a strong presence throughout the area. A procession involving a group of lawyers warted during the heightened security measures. However, according to reports from The Daily Star, Das was not physically brought to the court.s also repo

ISKCON Appeals for Protection

In response to the developments, ISKCON Kolkata Vice President Radharaman called on the Bangladeshi government to ensure the safety of Das's legal representatives. He expressed concern about the attack on Raman Roy and emphasized the need for the government to protect advocates involved in the case. Radharaman also voiced worries about Das’s health and treatment in custody, urging authorities to ensure his safety.

Case Background

Chinmoy Krishna Das, a member of the Sammilita Sanatani Jagaran Jote, was arrested in Dhaka on November 25. His arrest followed allegations from an October 31 complaint by a local politician, accusing Das and others of disrespecting Bangladesh’s national flag during a rally organized by the Hindu community. These allegations have raised concerns among various religious and human rights organizations.
