Bangladesh Cricket Board Confirms New Vice-Captain Roles Across Formats

Bangladesh have revamped their leadership group across formats as they gear up for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 and a crucial stretch of World Test Championship fixtures. The Bangladesh Cricket Board confirmed three new deputies: Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Najmul Hossain Shanto, and Saif Hassan as vice-captains for Tests, ODIs, and T20Is respectively.

Changes In Test Leadership

The red-ball setup will now see Mehidy Hasan Miraz taking charge as Test vice-captain, working under skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto. The board has also clarified that Shanto will continue to lead the Test side until the end of the 2025–27 WTC cycle, ensuring long-term stability.

Recent Test Success

Bangladesh enter this new phase on a positive note after defeating Ireland by an innings and 47 runs in their latest Test outing. They currently hold a 1-0 lead in the two-match series, with the second Test scheduled to begin on November 19 in Dhaka.

ODI Structure Re-Shuffled

Interestingly, the ODI hierarchy sees a role reversal. In the 50-over format, Shanto will now serve as deputy to Miraz, who was appointed as Bangladesh’s ODI captain earlier in June for a one-year term. The leadership shuffle reflects the board’s confidence in both players’ tactical maturity.

Saif Hassan Steps Up In T20Is

Bangladesh’s T20I structure also gets a boost with opening batter Saif Hassan being named vice-captain. His consistent performances in 18 T20Is, including four crucial fifties lower down the order, have impressed the selectors. Saif will serve as deputy to Litton Das, who took over as T20I captain in May and will continue to lead the Tigers into the T20 World Cup 2026.

Upcoming Assignments For Bangladesh

Before turning their attention to the global tournament, Bangladesh will face Ireland in a three-match T20I series starting November 27, right after the ongoing Test series wraps up. With fresh leaders across all three formats, the Tigers are looking to build momentum ahead of a packed international calendar.
