Complaint and Police Action
On Friday, BookMyShow complained to the Vile Parle Police Station in Mumbai. They provided the police with 27 mobile numbers allegedly used to sell Coldplay tickets at inflated prices through WhatsApp, Instagram, and other social media platforms. The tickets were reportedly sold for as much as ₹3 lakhs, far above the official prices.
Pooja Mitra, general manager of the legal department at BookMyShow, expressed concern over the resale of tickets. She noted that when tickets went live on September 22, the company clearly stated they should not be purchased from third-party sellers. Despite this warning, BookMyShow received emails from two individuals who wanted to buy maximum tickets and claimed they were securing tickets for others in exchange for money.
Investigation Details
According to a police officer, the company had provided them with 27 mobile numbers that were being used to sell tickets for the Coldplay concert through various websites like Viagogo.com. The officer mentioned that the tickets might be fake but were being sold at inflated rates. This situation had raised significant concerns over ticket authenticity and consumer fraud.
Legal Charges Filed
Following the complaint, the police have booked unidentified persons under several sections of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita, including:
- Section 318 (4) for cheating
- Section 319 (2) for cheating by personation
- Section 66C of the Information Technology Act for identity theft
The police are currently working to trace and identify the individuals behind these illegal sales.
Previous Investigations
This situation adds to the ongoing scrutiny of ticket sales for the Coldplay concert. The Mumbai Police's Economic Offences Wing (EOW) had previously summoned Ashish Hemrajani, CEO of Big Tree Entertainment, for questioning related to the alleged black market sales of tickets. However, Hemrajani skipped the summons, prompting further investigation.
