ChatGPT Not Working? Downdetector Reports Spike in Complaints

ChatGPT, the popular AI chatbot by OpenAI, faced a major outage on Wednesday, leaving thousands of users frustrated across the globe. From India to the US, many reported errors on both the website and app before the service gradually began restoring.

According to Downdetector, a website that monitors online service disruptions, hundreds of users flagged ChatGPT issues shortly after 11 am on Wednesday. The problem appeared worldwide, with India alone recording over 500 outage reports. By 3:30 pm, the number of complaints had dropped significantly to 42.

Nature of the Issues

As per Downdetector data, about 85% of users experienced trouble directly with ChatGPT. Around 13% faced problems with the OpenAI website, while 2% reported errors with the Writing Coach feature. The outages affected both the web and mobile app versions, with some users encountering repeated network errors.

OpenAI Yet to Respond

At the time of writing, OpenAI has not issued an official statement regarding the disruption. While some users said the chatbot was functioning normally, many others expressed frustration on social media, citing work disruptions and interrupted workflows.

Past ChatGPT Outages

This isn’t the first time ChatGPT has gone offline. In the past few months, the AI platform has seen several global outages:

  • Jan 23, 2025: A worldwide failure hit users in Spain, Argentina, and the US for over three hours.
  • Dec 26, 2024: A major glitch temporarily paralyzed the service.
  • Feb 5, 2025: More than 22,000 reports surfaced globally after another outage.
  • Sept 1–3, 2025: Users also reported multiple short service disruptions, including a 10-minute downtime on Sept 3.

Alternatives to ChatGPT

For those impacted, several AI chatbot alternatives are available:

  • Google Gemini – known for fast and efficient text generation.
  • Microsoft Copilot – a ChatGPT-like experience with image generation.

  • Jasper Chat – built for creators, offering SEO-friendly outputs.
