Chennai News: In a shocking incident at Kalaignar Centenary Hospital in Chennai, Dr. Balaji, an oncologist, was brutally attacked on Wednesday by Vignesh, the son of one of his patients. Vignesh allegedly accused Dr. Balaji of prescribing the wrong medication for his parent, which led to the violent attack. The incident occurred in the hospital’s Outpatient Department when Vignesh attacked Dr. Balaji with a small knife, which he had secretly brought into the hospital.

Doctor in Critical Condition

The attack left Dr. Balaji severely injured, and he was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for treatment. Doctors are working to stabilize his condition. The assailant, Vignesh, was quickly arrested by the police. Authorities confirmed that he was a resident of Chennai and had acted alone in the attack.

Health Minister’s Reaction

Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian visited Kalaignar Centenary Hospital later in the day to express his shock over the incident. He confirmed that Vignesh had been arrested and promised that any others involved in the attack would be swiftly apprehended. The minister also emphasized the need for stronger security measures in hospitals to prevent such incidents in the future.

Chief Minister’s Condemnation

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin condemned the attack, expressing deep concern over the violence directed at a healthcare worker. In a statement CM Stalin reassured the public that Dr. Balaji would receive all necessary medical care and that a detailed investigation would be conducted. He also praised the work of government doctors, emphasizing the importance of ensuring their safety. The CM vowed that the state government would take every measure to prevent such incidents from happening again.

Calls for Better Protection for Healthcare Workers

This attack has reignited concerns about the safety of medical staff in public hospitals. The incident follows a similar attack earlier this year in Kolkata, where a doctor was murdered while on duty. That case led to protests by medical professionals nationwide, calling for better protection and stricter regulations for healthcare workers. Many are now urging for stronger security measures to prevent such violence from occurring again in hospitals.
