This year, the four-day celebration of Chhath Puja started on Tuesday with the ritual of Nahay-Khay, which marks the beginning of the festival. The day is dedicated to purification and preparation, where devotees cleanse themselves, take a holy bath, and prepare traditional food offerings for the coming days.

Importance of Chhath Puja

Although Chhath Puja is celebrated across India, it holds special significance in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Eastern Uttar Pradesh. These regions see large gatherings of devotees who perform rituals at sacred ghats like those on the Yamuna and Ganga rivers. On Tuesday morning, thousands of devotees gathered at the ghats to perform the first rituals of the festival with deep faith.

Key Rituals of Chhath Puja

The four-day Chhath Puja consists of the following main rituals:

Nahay-Khay (Day 1): On the Chaturthi Tithi of Kartik Shukla Paksha, the festival begins with purification.

Kharna (Day 2): On Panchami Tithi, devotees fast throughout the day and offer kheer (a sweet dish) and fruits in the evening.

Chhath Puja (Day 3): The main day of the festival, celebrated on Sashti Tithi, when prayers are offered to the Sun God at sunrise and sunset.

Usha Arghya (Day 4): The festival concludes on Saptami Tithi with the final offering to the rising sun on November 8.
