Sambhaji became the second Chhatrapati of the Maratha Empire after Shivaji’s death. He ruled the kingdom from 1681 to 1689. His birthday is celebrated every year in Maharashtra with grand processions, religious functions, and cultural programs.
Why Did Shivaji Maharaj Imprison Sambhaji?
Sambhaji Maharaj’s life was full of challenges, especially from within his own family. After his mother’s death, his relationship with his stepmother, Soyarabai, turned bitter. Soyarabai wanted her own son, Rajaram, to become king instead of Sambhaji.
Because of this rivalry, many political games were played in the royal court. It is said that some courtiers, along with Soyarabai, influenced Shivaji Maharaj against Sambhaji. As a result, Shivaji briefly imprisoned his own son, accusing him of plotting against him.
Sambhaji’s Temporary Alliance with the Mughals
After escaping prison, Sambhaji joined the Mughal commander Diler Khan for a short period. This move was more about survival than betrayal. However, this only worsened the situation at home. He was not invited to Rajaram’s wedding, and even after Shivaji Maharaj’s death, he was not informed officially.
How Sambhaji Claimed His Rightful Throne
Despite all the troubles, Sambhaji showed great strength and leadership. He overcame the false accusations and took control of the Maratha Empire. His rule ensured that Shivaji’s legacy lived on. Sambhaji’s bravery and smart decisions helped protect the kingdom from both family politics and outside enemies.
