A few weeks after the tragic death of 26-year-old chartered accountant Anna Sebastian Perayil, who worked at Ernst & Young in Pune, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's comments about “stress management” have sparked significant debate.

Remarks on Stress Management

During an event at a medical college in Chennai, Sitharaman addressed the importance of inner strength in handling pressure, suggesting it can only be achieved through divinity. Although she did not mention Ernst & Young specifically, she referred to the recent news of a woman who died due to work-related stress, emphasizing the need for families to teach their children resilience alongside formal education.

Opposition Reactions

The comments drew criticism from various political leaders. Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, expressed his commitment to ensuring that Anna's tragic death leads to meaningful change. He promised support to her family in this effort. Priyanka Chaturvedi, a Rajya Sabha MP from Shiv Sena, criticized the finance minister for her remarks, stating that Anna had the strength to manage her studies but fell victim to a toxic work culture.

In response, Sitharaman clarified that her comments were meant to emphasize the need for inner strength and were not intended to blame the victim. She stated that the university where she spoke had set up meditation facilities for students, reinforcing her belief in the importance of supporting young people.

Labour Ministry Investigation

In light of growing concerns about Anna's working conditions, the Union Labour Ministry has initiated an investigation into allegations of an unsafe and exploitative work environment at Ernst & Young. Minister of State for Labour Shobha Karandlaje expressed deep sorrow over Anna's death and reaffirmed the commitment to justice.

Mother’s Account of Work Conditions

Anna's mother, Anita Augustine, wrote to Ernst & Young’s chairman, highlighting the toxic work culture that she believed contributed to her daughter's death. She described how Anna would return home exhausted, often collapsing from the pressure of constant demands at work, despite her determination to succeed.

Ernst & Young’s Response

In response to Anita's letter, Ernst & Young India Chairman Rajiv Memani acknowledged the family's concerns with seriousness and humility. He expressed deep condolences and emphasized his commitment to the well-being of employees, promising to create a supportive work environment.
