Cyclone Fengal Brings Heavy Rainfall to Karnataka, Bengaluru; School Closures in Affected Areas
Cyclone Fengal: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall in Karnataka, including Bengaluru, for the next three days due to Cyclone Fengal. The cyclone affects the region, bringing wet weather from December 2 to December 4. A yellow alert has been issued for several districts in Karnataka, including Chamarajanagar, Chikkamagaluru, Dakshina Kannada, Hasan, Kodagu, Mysuru, Shivamogga, and Udupi, on December 2.
Rainfall Expected in Bengaluru and Surrounding Areas
According to IMD Bengaluru Director CS Patil, Bengaluru and areas in south and interior Karnataka will likely experience light to moderate rainfall over the next three days. The rainfall could be heavier in certain regions. IMD has advised residents to stay alert as the weather worsens.
School and College Closures in Some Areas
Due to the heavy rainfall, schools and colleges in Chickballapur and Kolar districts have been closed on December 2 as a precautionary measure. The Deputy Commissioners of these districts declared a holiday for educational institutions. However, schools and colleges in Bengaluru have not yet announced closures, although in previous instances of heavy rainfall, holidays were declared by the Bengaluru Urban District Collector.
Cyclone Fengal Weakens After Making Landfall
Cyclone Fengal, which made landfall on November 30 in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, has weakened into a depression. The IMD confirmed that the depression has moved west-northwestwards and is expected to continue weakening over the next six hours. Despite its weakening, the cyclone has caused significant rainfall and flooding in various regions of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
Heavy Rainfall in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry
Puducherry has recorded one of its heaviest rainfalls, with 48.6 cm of rain, causing difficulties in drainage systems. As a result, the government declared a holiday for all government and private schools and colleges in Puducherry. Similar closures have been announced in several districts of Tamil Nadu, including Villupuram, Cuddalore, Vellore, and Ranipet. Heavy rainfall has caused flooding in Cuddalore, one of the worst-hit areas.
