Even though the GST rates have been reduced this year, the jump in silver prices has offset that relief. According to traders, the cost of silver foil — once priced at Rs.350 — has now gone up by Rs.300, forcing sweet manufacturers to revise prices to stay profitable while trying to keep sweets affordable for festive buyers.
Silver Foil Explained
Known as vark or varak, silver foil is an ultra-thin edible layer used to decorate Indian sweets. Traditionally, it adds a sense of luxury and purity to sweets like Kaju Katli, Pista Roll, and Besan Chakki. It is also used in paan, cardamom, betel nuts, and Chyawanprash, enhancing both appearance and perceived freshness.
Traditional Making Process
To make vark, silver is beaten into an extremely thin sheet — only a few micrometers thick. Earlier, animal skin or leather was used to make the foil, but today, German butter paper or machine-based techniques ensure a vegetarian-friendly process, making it suitable for religious occasions and fasting.

Silver has been part of Indian traditions for centuries due to its antibacterial properties.
