Doctor Attacked at Delhi Hospital: A resident doctor at Doctor Hedgewar Hospital in Karkardooma, Delhi, was attacked by a patient's relative on the night of August 24. This incident occurred just a day after resident doctors had ended an 11-day nationwide strike. The strike was held in response to the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal.
Attack on Doctor
According to reports, the attack happened around 1:00 am when a patient with a forehead injury was brought to the hospital. The doctor took the patient to the dressing room to treat the wound. During the procedure, the patient, who was intoxicated, suddenly became violent. The doctor reported that after completing one stitch and starting on another, the patient pushed him and began shouting.
The doctor also claimed that the patient’s son, who was waiting outside, entered the room, slapped him, and joined in the abuse.
Background of the Strike
The nationwide strike by doctors began on August 12 and caused major disruptions in non-emergency services at central and Delhi government hospitals, including outpatient departments and diagnostic services. The strike ended on August 23 after the Supreme Court intervened, promising to address doctors' safety concerns. The Court set up a 10-member National Task Force to create safety protocols for medical staff, with an interim report due in three weeks and a final report within two months.
Government Response
In response to the strike and the safety concerns raised, Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra announced on August 19 that there would be a 25% increase in security personnel at all Central Government Hospitals.

Additionally, the deployment of Marshalls for immediate security assistance would be approved based on requests from these hospitals. This measure aims to enhance security and prevent further incidents.
