Douglas County Plans to Close 3 Schools in Highlands Ranch – Here's Why

The Douglas County School District has proposed closing three elementary schools in Highlands Ranch to address the issue of decreasing student numbers. If the school board approves the plan in a public meeting on April 22, the changes will be implemented starting the 2026-27 academic year.

Which Schools Will Be Closed?

The schools recommended for closure are:

• Saddle Ranch Elementary – Students will be transferred to Eldorado Elementary.

• Heritage Elementary – Students will be moved to Summit View Elementary.

• Acres Green Elementary – Students will attend Fox Creek Elementary.

Why Are These Schools Closing?

School district officials explained that the decision is based on an extensive study of student enrollment trends. The goal is to provide all students with access to quality education, complete staffing, and necessary resources.

Changes for Sixth-Grade Students

Apart from school closures, the district also plans to shift sixth-grade students to middle schools in Highlands Ranch. This change will impact schools that feed into Cresthill, Mountain Ridge, and Ranch View middle schools. Officials aim to expand this transition districtwide in the future.

The Douglas County School Board will vote on the proposal on April 22. If approved, these changes will take effect at the beginning of the 2026-27 school year.
