Election Commission Invites Congress Delegation to Discuss Concerns Over Maharashtra Polls
On November 30, 2024, the Election Commission of India (EC) invited a delegation from the Indian National Congress (INC) to address concerns regarding the recently concluded 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections. The EC assured the Congress party that it would review all legitimate concerns raised by them. The meeting is scheduled for December 3, 2024.
Congress Raises Issues Over Election Data
On November 29, 2024, the Congress approached the Election Commission with serious concerns about the polling and counting processes in the Maharashtra Assembly elections. The party claimed there were “serious and grave inconsistencies” in the data related to voter turnout and polling procedures. The Congress sought an in-person hearing to present evidence supporting their claims.
EC Responds to Congress’ Allegations
In its response, the Election Commission reassured the Congress party that the election process in Maharashtra had been transparent. The Commission stated that all candidates and their agents were involved at every stage of the election, ensuring full transparency. The EC further emphasized that the voter turnout data was accurate, with no discrepancies. All polling station-wise data was made available to the candidates, which could be verified.
Explanation of Voter Turnout Data
The EC clarified the difference between the 5 pm polling data and the final voter turnout figures. It explained that the gap was due to procedural priorities, as presiding officers are responsible for completing several statutory duties near the close of polling, before updating the final voter turnout numbers.
New Measures for Transparency
The Election Commission also informed the Congress that, as an additional measure for transparency, a press note was introduced during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, which was later followed in all subsequent assembly elections. This note, which was issued around 11:45 pm, provided additional disclosures to ensure openness in the electoral process.
