Government’s Fresh Order
According to the official directive, “The order of compulsory leave with respect to Dr K Ramachandra Rao, IPS (KN 1993) is hereby withdrawn. The officer is posted until further orders as DGP, Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement, in the upgraded vacant post.”
Background of the Case
In March, while serving as Managing Director of the Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation, Rao was sent on compulsory leave after Ranya Rao was caught at Bengaluru Airport with 14.2 kg of gold worth Rs.12.56 crore, smuggled from Dubai.
Allegations and Denial
During the probe, a protocol officer at Kempegowda Airport Police Station claimed that he had assisted the actor’s arrival and departure under direct instructions from Rao. However, Rao strongly denied these claims, calling himself a “heartbroken parent” who only learned of the arrest through the media. He also clarified that his stepdaughter had been living separately since her marriage.
Ranya Rao’s Jail Term
The COFEPOSA Advisory Board recently sentenced Ranya Rao and her co-accused — Tarun Kondaru Raju and Sahil Jain — to one year in prison. The order, issued by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on May 23, also prohibits the trio from applying for bail during their sentence.
