John Barla is a well-known tribal leader from the tea garden region of North Bengal. TMC leaders said his leadership will strengthen the party in the region and help in planning development for tea garden workers and tribal communities.
After joining TMC, John Barla thanked Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He said they had been discussing this for the past 6 to 7 months and Mamata herself had encouraged him to join.
Barla revealed that he wanted to build a hospital for tribal people, costing around ₹160 crore, but his work was stopped. He blamed BJP leader and current opposition leader Subhendu Adhikari for this. According to him, Subhendu contacted the ministry and stopped the hospital project.
Barla said, "I wanted to do good work for my people, but BJP leaders, including those from my own party, insulted me and blocked my efforts. So why should I stay in a party that doesn’t let me work for the people?"
He added that the TMC government is actively working to improve the lives of tea garden workers and tribal communities, which is why he decided to switch sides.
