On September 2, 2024, a French pensioner named Dominique P went on trial in Avignon, France, accused of drugging his wife and allowing numerous strangers to rape her. Dominique P, a former employee of France's state-owned energy company EDF, is facing trial alongside 50 other men recruited online.

Details of the Allegations

Police report that a total of 92 rapes were committed by 72 men, with 51 of them identified. The assaults allegedly took place over nearly a decade, with the 72-year-old victim being so heavily sedated that she was unaware of the abuse. The accused men, aged between 26 and 74, are charged with these crimes.

Court Proceedings

The trial began with Judge Roger Arata ruling that all hearings would be public, a decision supported by the victim, who wants to raise awareness about her case to prevent similar incidents in the future. Her lawyer, Stephane Babonneau, stated that the victim's goal is to ensure full transparency throughout the trial.

Impact on the Victim

The victim, accompanied by her three children, chose not to have the trial closed to the public, believing it would align with what her attackers desired. Her attorney, Antoine Camus, noted that the trial would be a "horrible ordeal" for her, as it would involve reliving the abuse she endured over a decade.

Accused’s Background

Dominique P has claimed that he was raped by a male nurse at the age of nine. In addition to the current charges, he faces allegations related to a 1991 murder and rape, and an attempted rape in 1999.
