The G7 Summit 2025 is underway in Kananaskis, Alberta, from June 15 to 17. While global leaders gather under tight security, a private aircraft breached the designated no-fly zone, triggering immediate concerns about the adequacy of Canada’s security arrangements. The incident has prompted backlash and raised eyebrows over how such an error could happen at an event of this magnitude.

Fighter Jet Intercepts Intruding Aircraft Over Summit Airspace

The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) responded swiftly by deploying a CF-18 Hornet fighter jet. The private aircraft was intercepted and escorted to a secure reserve airbase. Authorities are now rigorously questioning the pilot to determine the motive and gather more information about the security lapse.

Flight Restrictions in Place Around Calgary and Kananaskis

To ensure the safety of attending dignitaries, temporary flight restrictions had already been imposed in the skies over Calgary and Kananaskis. The Kananaskis zone spans a 30-nautical-mile radius, while the Calgary International Airport area is under a 20-nautical-mile restriction. These rules are set to remain in place until midnight on June 18.

Canada Hosts the G7 Presidency for the Seventh Time

Canada is hosting the G7 Summit for the seventh time, bringing together leaders from the European Union, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the US. Prime Minister Mark Carney is leading the summit, having already held a one-on-one discussion with US President Donald Trump focused on easing trade tensions and revisiting tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.

Though India is not a G7 member, Canadian PM Carney extended a special invitation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This marks Modi’s sixth consecutive appearance at the G7 Summit. He is expected to present India's views on pressing global challenges, reinforcing the country’s commitment to multilateral cooperation.
