Golden Temple Goes Dark for Half an Hour
One of the most striking visuals of the drill came from Amritsar's Golden Temple. The temple’s lights were turned off from 10:30 pm to 11 pm. This was done as a safety measure to check how quickly and smoothly a blackout could be implemented.
Police Urge People to Stay Calm and Indoors
Amritsar’s District Public Relations Officer (DPRO) requested people to remain indoors and not to panic during the blackout. Police officer Jagtar Singh said the aim was to stay hidden from enemies in case of a real threat. A siren was also used to start the blackout process, which was completed in two minutes.
Multiple Cities Participated in the Drill
Apart from Amritsar, several other cities and states like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Himachal Pradesh also turned off lights at important public places. In Delhi, even Rashtrapati Bhavan and Vijay Chowk were dark during the drill.
Operation Sindoor Launched After Pahalgam Terror Attack
The blackout drill followed India’s launch of Operation Sindoor. This military action was in response to a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, which killed 26 civilians. The Indian armed forces carried out strikes on terrorist camps in Pakistan and PoK (Pakistan-occupied Kashmir).
