Govt Pushes for 'Desi' Dress Code at AIIMS, INI, Ditching Colonial Black Robes
The Health Ministry has announced plans to introduce a new "appropriate Indian dress code" for convocation ceremonies at AIIMS, INIs, and similar institutions. This change is aimed at replacing the traditional black robe and cap, which are seen as a colonial legacy.
Reason for Change
The current practice of wearing black robes and caps during convocation ceremonies dates back to medieval Europe and was introduced by the British in their colonies. The Health Ministry believes this tradition, which is a remnant of colonial times, should be updated.
New Dress Code Guidelines
The Ministry has directed that institutions like AIIMS and INIs, which provide medical education, should create a dress code that reflects the local traditions of the state where the institution is located. Each institute is required to design an appropriate Indian dress code for their convocation ceremonies.
