Harvard to Offer Free Tuition for Families Earning Under $200K – Who Qualifies?

Harvard University is making history by offering free undergraduate tuition to students from families earning $200,000 or less per year. This change, starting from the 2025-26 academic year, aims to provide talented students with equal opportunities, regardless of their financial background.

Who Can Benefit from This Program?

Harvard’s new financial aid structure applies to different income groups:

1. Families earning $100,000 or less: Full coverage of tuition, housing, meals, and fees. Additionally, students receive a $2,000 grant in their first and junior years.
2. Families earning between $100,000–$200,000: Tuition is fully covered, but aid for housing and other expenses varies based on financial needs.
3. Families earning above $200,000: Financial aid may still be available, but not guaranteed.

However, this policy applies only to U.S. citizens and permanent residents, meaning international students, including those from India, are not eligible.

Why Is Harvard Making This Change?

Harvard’s leadership sees this as a long-term investment in accessibility. University President Alan M. Garber emphasized that financial status should not limit educational opportunities. “We want the best and brightest students at Harvard, regardless of income,” he stated. Harvard is following the footsteps of Princeton and Stanford, which have also increased financial aid for middle-income families in recent years.

Harvard’s History of Expanding Financial Aid

Harvard has been expanding its financial aid programs for over two decades:

• 2004: Launched the Harvard Financial Aid Initiative (HFAI), covering tuition for families earning below $40,000.
• 2012: Increased the income threshold to $65,000.
• 2023: Extended full tuition coverage to families earning $85,000 or less.
• 2025: Now covering tuition for families earning up to $200,000.

The Impact on Higher Education

Harvard’s decision is expected to set a precedent for other top universities.
