From August 7, UAN activation via UMANG app is mandatory

From August 7, 2025, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has made it mandatory for all members to activate their Universal Account Number (UAN) using the UMANG app. This can only be done through Aadhaar-based face authentication, marking a major shift toward a fully digital PF access system.

Without this activation, members will not be able to access any EPFO services, including checking balance, submitting claims, or downloading the UAN card. The goal is to streamline user experience and reduce dependency on employers.

UMANG App-Based Activation Process

To get started, users need to download the UMANG app, available on Android and iOS. Inside the app, select EPFO → UAN Allotment and Activation. Enter your Aadhaar and mobile number, then give consent to verify the details.

After receiving an OTP on your Aadhaar-linked mobile, complete the face authentication process. If a UAN doesn’t already exist, one will be generated automatically. Once verified, users receive their UAN and a temporary password via SMS.

Why This Change Matters

Earlier, employees had to rely on their employers to generate and activate their UANs, often causing delays or incorrect data entries. Now, members can activate UAN independently and get immediate access to features like EPF balance, KYC updates, pension status, and UAN card download.

EPFO data shows that only 35% of UANs were activated directly by members. With this new system, more employees—especially those who change jobs frequently or live in rural areas—can take full control of their retirement savings.

Digital EPF for Everyone

This face-authentication system removes the need for physical documents or employer support. It ensures faster processing of withdrawals, transfers, and claim settlements. The process is beneficial especially for employees in remote areas where EPFO offices are not easily accessible.

However, there are some exceptions. International workers and citizens of Nepal and Bhutan must still follow the older system, as Aadhaar authentication is not applicable to them.

What You Need to Do

If your UAN is not yet activated, you must use the UMANG app to complete the process. Without activation, you’ll lose access to vital EPFO services such as checking your EPF passbook, claim status, or balance.

Activating your UAN not only gives you control over your account but also helps you keep track of your retirement savings—securely, conveniently, and digitally.
