Independence Day 2024: On India’s 78th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered his longest speech yet, lasting 98 minutes. This speech surpassed his previous record of 96 minutes from 2016. Modi’s shortest Independence Day speech was 56 minutes long in 2017. On average, his speeches last around 82 minutes, longer than any other prime minister in India’s history. Before Modi, Jawaharlal Nehru held the record for the longest speech at 72 minutes. Nehru and Indira Gandhi gave the shortest speeches on record, at 14 minutes in 1954 and 1966, respectively.

Focus on 'Viksit Bharat 2047'

In his 98-minute address, Prime Minister Modi highlighted this year’s theme: 'Viksit Bharat 2047', which aims to turn India into a developed nation by 2047. He emphasized the importance of public suggestions in shaping this vision, saying, “The many suggestions we received reflect the dreams and aspirations of our citizens. When the people of the nation have such big dreams, it lifts our self-confidence and strengthens our resolve.”

Addressing Women's Safety

Modi also addressed the critical issue of women's safety in light of the recent rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. He urged for serious action, stating, “The country, society, and State Governments need to take this seriously. Speedy investigation and strict punishment for such crimes are essential to restore confidence in society.”

Plans and Criticisms

The Prime Minister declared this period as a golden era for the country and outlined various development plans across different sectors. He discussed economic reforms, natural disaster management, a secular civil code, and maternity leave for working women. Modi also criticized some opposition members, saying, “While we are advancing with our goals, there are those who can’t see progress or think of India’s good unless it benefits them. The country must guard itself against these pessimistic individuals.”
