Jaiswal said, “This attack is yet another grim reminder of the challenge we face from the evil forces of terrorism, which the global community must combat and defeat through united and concerted action.” India also expressed solidarity with the United Kingdom, offering prayers for the victims, their families, and the city of Manchester.
Attack During Yom Kippur
The violent incident occurred around 9:30 am outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation in Manchester’s Crumpsall district, where worshippers had gathered for Yom Kippur services. Police confirmed that the attacker rammed a car into pedestrians before stabbing a security guard. Armed officers quickly responded and shot the suspect dead. Greater Manchester Police classified the assault as a terrorist attack after confirming two deaths.
Shock in Jewish Community
The timing of the assault, on Yom Kippur—the holiest day in the Jewish calendar—has shaken Britain’s Jewish community. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the act, calling it a reminder that terrorism thrives on weakness. He emphasized that only “strength and unity” can defeat extremist violence.
Global Leaders React
UN Secretary-General António Guterres also denounced the attack, stating that targeting a sacred place of worship is “particularly heinous.” The Israeli Embassy in London described it as “abhorrent and deeply distressing.” In the UK, Prime Minister Keir Starmer cut short an overseas trip to chair an emergency COBRA meeting, calling the incident “horrific” and praising emergency responders for their swift action.
Security Measures in UK
London Mayor Sadiq Khan confirmed that additional patrols had been deployed outside synagogues to reassure the Jewish community. King Charles expressed that he was “deeply shocked and saddened,” while Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham urged residents to remain calm and avoid the area as investigations continue.
