Anita Anand, a senior Indian-origin leader in Canada, has been appointed as the new Minister of Foreign Affairs. She replaces Melanie Joly, who now serves as Minister of Industry. This major move is part of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s new cabinet reshuffle after the 2025 elections.

Oath Taken on the Bhagavad Gita

Anand took her oath of office by placing her hand on the Bhagavad Gita, continuing a tradition she followed in her earlier roles too. She shared her excitement on X (formerly Twitter), saying she looks forward to working for a fairer and safer world.

Fresh Start Under Mark Carney

Prime Minister Carney formed a diverse and balanced cabinet of 28 ministers, including several new faces and 50% women. He aims to show a fresh approach, moving away from the previous leadership of Justin Trudeau. Carney said the new cabinet will "deliver the change Canadians want and need," especially during strained Canada-US relations.

Strong Political Journey

Anita Anand has represented Oakville East in the House of Commons since winning the 2025 elections. Between 2019 and 2025, she represented Oakville and held top portfolios like Minister of Defence, Public Services and Procurement, Transport, and Treasury Board President.

Early Life and Education

Born on May 20, 1967, in Nova Scotia, Anita Anand is the daughter of Indian immigrants. Her father is from Tamil Nadu and her mother from Punjab. She grew up with two sisters and moved to Ontario at the age of 18. She earned degrees from Oxford University, Dalhousie University, and the University of Toronto, focusing on law and political science.

Personal Life and Achievements

Anita married Canadian lawyer John Knowlton in 1995, and they have four children. She became the first Hindu to serve in Canada’s federal cabinet in 2019 and gained respect for her work, especially as Defence Minister.
