India’s First Airport Air Train Coming to Delhi by 2027
Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport is set to become the first airport in India to introduce an air train system. This new initiative aims to enhance passenger convenience by providing seamless connectivity between airport terminals, parking lots, and other facilities, thereby reducing travel time across the airport.
Details of the Air Train System
The air train, also known as an Automated People Mover (APM), will connect several key locations at the airport, including Terminals 1, 2, 3, Aerocity, and Cargo City. The system will cover a distance of approximately 7.7 kilometers and feature four stations. It is designed to replace the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus service that is currently used for terminal transfers.
Project Timeline and Costs
Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) has already issued a tender for the construction of this air train system, with bids expected to be submitted in October and November. The estimated cost of the project is around ₹2,000 crore, though the exact figure is yet to be confirmed. The project will follow the Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) model, ensuring the air train is built and managed efficiently.
Expected Benefits
The air train system is expected to be operational by the end of 2027. It will not only provide quick and reliable transportation between terminals but also enhance the airport's ASQ (Airport Service Quality) score, improve passenger satisfaction, and reduce the carbon footprint. As passenger numbers at the airport are predicted to double over the next six to seven years, this system is crucial to maintaining smooth operations.
