International Tiger Day 2025: Madhya Pradesh has once again lived up to its reputation as the Tiger State. The latest 2022 tiger census confirms that the state is home to 785 of India’s 3,682 wild tigers—more than any other state. This feat isn’t just a stroke of luck but the result of deliberate and consistent conservation efforts led by the state government.

From deploying modern surveillance tech to engaging local communities, MP’s tiger population is thriving. The growing presence of tigers is also attracting a large number of foreign tourists, giving a much-needed boost to the local economy.

Pench Shines Among India's Best Tiger Reserves

Pench, Satpura, Kanha, Bandhavgarh, and Sanjay have emerged as the best-managed tiger reserves in the country. Among them, Pench Tiger Reserve has bagged the highest score in the effectiveness evaluation report, while Satpura has found a spot on UNESCO’s potential World Heritage Sites list. The strategic efforts under Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav’s leadership, including relocating forest villages and creating pressure-free habitats, are clearly paying off.

Foreign Tourist Footfall Soars in MP’s Tiger Reserves

As per the Wildlife Institute of India’s findings, Kanha is considered the most ideal habitat for tigers in the country due to its rich food chain and water availability. In the 2024–25 period, over 85,000 foreign tourists visited the state's reserves, generating an impressive ₹61 crore in revenue—a major win for eco-tourism.

Drone Squads & Genetic Testing—Tech-Driven Tiger Conservation

Modern technology is playing a crucial role in tiger protection. A dedicated ‘drone squad’ has been deployed in Panna Tiger Reserve to monitor wildlife and respond swiftly to threats like forest fires. Additionally, gene testing and new rescue centers have been initiated in Ujjain and Jabalpur, making MP a leader in wildlife innovation.

Relocation Efforts Ease Pressure on Forests

The government has displaced 200 villages to reduce human pressure on tiger habitats. Successful relocation of chital (spotted deer) into chital-deficient areas has helped maintain the food chain, ensuring a balanced ecosystem for the big cats.

Stronger Wildlife Protection and Community Involvement

To curb poaching and illegal activities, MP has adopted advanced surveillance tools like camera traps, joint anti-poaching units, and drones. Forest committees involving villagers are now playing a proactive role in conservation, significantly reducing wildlife crimes.

A Look Back: The Global Tiger Day Pledge

International Tiger Day was initiated on July 29, 2010, when 13 nations gathered in St. Petersburg, Russia, and pledged to double the tiger population. Madhya Pradesh has not only met this goal but set a national benchmark in tiger management.
