Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections: Phase 2 Set for September 25
Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections: The second phase of Jammu and Kashmir's assembly elections will take place on Wednesday, September 25. Security has been significantly tightened across six districts: Reasi, Rajouri, Poonch in the Jammu region, and Srinagar, Ganderbal, and Budgam in Kashmir. Over the past three years, Reasi, Rajouri, and Poonch have seen multiple terror attacks, raising concerns for voter safety. To facilitate the smooth conduct of the elections, enhanced security measures have been put in place, especially in 11 assembly segments in hill districts that are more vulnerable to violence.
Election Details: Voters and Constituencies
More than 2.5 million voters will head to the polls on September 25, across 26 constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir. These include key districts in both the Kashmir Valley and Jammu division. Voting will be held between 7 am and 6 pm. The constituencies involved include Kangan, Ganderbal, Hazratbal, and several others in central Kashmir, along with Gulabgarh, Reasi, Rajouri, and Poonch in the Jammu region. A total of 239 candidates are competing in these constituencies.
Prominent Candidates in the Fray
This phase features several prominent candidates. Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is running for two seats, Ganderbal and Budgam. JKPCC president Tariq Hamid Karra is contesting from Central Shalteng, while BJP J&K chief Ravinder Raina is aiming for re-election from Nowshera in Rajouri, a seat he has held since 2014.
Security Challenges and Cross-Border Threats
Given the recent history of violence, particularly in districts along the Line of Control (LoC), officials have developed a comprehensive security plan. This includes measures to counter any potential cross-border shelling, although the likelihood remains low due to the ongoing ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Voters in areas that have experienced repeated attacks since 2021, such as the recent deadly assault on a pilgrim bus in Reasi, will see heightened security to ensure their safety.
