Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai Becomes 52nd Chief Justice of India for 6 Months

Justice BR Gavai Appointed 52nd CJI, Will Serve Till November

Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai took oath as the 52nd Chief Justice of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The oath was administered by President Droupadi Murmu. He replaces Justice Sanjiv Khanna as the head of India’s judiciary.

Six-Month Tenure Before Retirement Of Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai

Justice Gavai will serve as the Chief Justice for six months. He will retire in November 2025. He began his legal career in 1985 and practiced at the Bombay High Court. He was appointed as a judge of the Bombay High Court in 2003 and became a permanent judge in 2005. He joined the Supreme Court in 2019.

Part of Key Supreme Court Judgments

During his time in the Supreme Court, Justice Gavai has been part of several important cases. He supported the 2016 demonetisation decision and was involved in declaring electoral bonds unconstitutional. He has written around 300 judgments, including many on constitutional matters.

A Historic Appointment

Justice Gavai is only the second Dalit judge to become the Chief Justice of India, after Justice KG Balakrishnan. His father, RS Gavai, was a social activist and politician who served as a Governor and MP. He also founded the Republican Party of India (Gavai).

Praise from Legal Community

Many leaders and legal experts praised Justice Gavai. Senior lawyer and MP Dr Abhishek Manu Singhvi called him a practical and result-driven judge who keeps court proceedings smooth. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta described him as humble, fair, and deeply knowledgeable. He also said Justice Gavai continues the legacy of Dr B.R. Ambedkar with dignity.
