Why is Karnataka Bandh Happening?
The protest stems from an alleged assault on a KSRTC bus conductor in Belagavi for not speaking Marathi. The incident reignited language disputes between Karnataka and Maharashtra, as Belagavi has long been a point of contention due to its Marathi-speaking population.
Following the attack, inter-state bus services between Maharashtra and Karnataka were suspended. Pro-Kannada organizations are demanding strict action against pro-Marathi groups and have called for a ban on such organizations.
Government's Stand on the Bandh
Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has stated that the state government does not support the bandh. He emphasized that protests should not disrupt students, especially during their exams. Security has been increased in Belagavi and other sensitive areas to prevent any untoward incidents.
