Khalid Jamil Appointed as Head Coach of Indian Football Team After 13 Years
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has named Khalid Jamil as the head coach of the Indian men’s national football team, making him the first Indian to take charge in 13 years. The last Indian to hold the post was Savio Medeira in 2011–12.
Jamil takes over from Manolo Marquez, who stepped down after a lackluster stint that saw no wins in over a year of competition. The appointment was finalised on August 1, following approval from the AIFF Executive Committee.

Jamil emerged as the top pick from a shortlist that included Stephen Constantine and Slovakia’s Stefan Tarkovic. Key factors in his selection were his deep understanding of Indian football, ability to connect with local players, and the federation's need to rein in expenses.
Budget Plays a Key Role in Decision
The AIFF’s financial health heavily influenced the move. With revenue dropping from ₹137.74 crore in 2023 to ₹110.5 crore in 2024 and the recent payout of USD 400,000 to terminate Igor Stimac’s contract, cost-efficiency became a pressing concern. Jamil’s appointment offered both footballing merit and fiscal relief.
Jamil’s Winning Track Record in Indian Football
Born in Kuwait, the 49-year-old Khalid Jamil has made history as both a player and coach. He lifted the National Football League (now I-League) title with Mahindra United in 2005 and pulled off a stunning I-League triumph with underdogs Aizawl FC in 2017 — a feat widely regarded as one of Indian football’s most inspiring moments.
An AFC Pro License holder, Jamil has coached across the Indian Super League (ISL), I-League, and I-League 2. His recent spell with Jamshedpur FC saw him guide the team to the Super Cup semifinals and an ISL playoff berth the following season.
