Kolkata Doctor's Murder Case: The trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata suffered numerous severe injuries, according to the autopsy report. India Today reports that the victim had over 14 injuries across her head, face, neck, arms, and genitals. The report confirmed evidence of forceful penetration, indicating sexual assault. The cause of death was determined to be manual strangulation combined with smothering, with the case officially classified as a homicide.

Autopsy Insights

The postmortem revealed hemorrhaging in the lungs and blood clots throughout the body, though no fractures were noted. Additional tests are being conducted on blood and other bodily fluids.

Supreme Court Involvement

The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the case and will address it on August 20. The court's bench, including Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, will hear the case related to the alleged rape and murder of the trainee doctor.

Protests and Investigations

Junior doctors in West Bengal and Delhi continued their strike, affecting healthcare services. In Kolkata, former principal Sandip Ghosh was questioned by the CBI for the third consecutive day. He was asked about his phone calls and actions surrounding the incident. The Kolkata Police have also summoned TMC MP Roy, who has demanded a fair investigation and custodial interrogation of Ghosh and the police commissioner. Additionally, former BJP MP Locket Chatterjee and doctors Dr. Kunal Sarkar and Dr. Subarna Goswami have been summoned for allegedly spreading rumors and revealing the victim’s identity.

Government and Medical Community Response

The West Bengal government has introduced measures to enhance safety for women in workplaces, including designated retiring rooms and CCTV-monitored safe zones in state-run hospitals. Over 70 Padma awardee doctors have urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to create a special law to protect healthcare workers and implement stricter safety protocols. They have called for immediate and severe penalties for violence against healthcare personnel.

The postgraduate trainee doctor’s body was found on August 9, and a civic volunteer was arrested the following day. The Calcutta High Court has transferred the case to the CBI for further investigation.
