Kerala BJP president Rajeev Chandrasekhar has hinted that the controversy surrounding L2: Empuraan, starring Mohanlal, may have been intentionally created by the film’s producers for promotional purposes. He claimed that the uproar was not initially a major issue but later turned into a political debate.

He further alleged that Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan played a key role in politicizing the matter, giving the film even more attention.

Why Did Kerala BJP president Rajeev Chandrasekhar Skip the Film?

Initially, Chandrasekhar was interested in watching L2: Empuraan as it is the sequel to Lucifer. However, he decided against it after the makers announced 17 scene cuts due to controversy. Mohanlal himself expressed disappointment over certain scenes, which further influenced Chandrasekhar’s decision.

"If Mohanlal is not happy with his film, why should I watch it? Once they release a better version, I may consider it," he said.

What Led to the Controversy?

The controversy erupted after right-wing groups and Hindu organizations criticized certain scenes in the movie, alleging that they distorted historical events, including the 2002 Gujarat riots. This led to social media backlash and boycott calls.

In response, the makers of L2: Empuraan announced edits to remove 17 scenes, including riot sequences and portrayals of violence against women.

Pinarayi Vijayan’s Involvement in the Debate

Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan watched L2: Empuraan with his family, further fueling political discussions. Chandrasekhar stated that Vijayan’s enthusiasm for the film made him even more reluctant to watch it.

“Why should I add fuel to Pinarayi Vijayan’s controversy?” he remarked.

Box Office Performance

Despite the controversy, L2: Empuraan opened to strong numbers. On its release day, it had 4,500 shows across 746 screens in Kerala alone. Reports suggest that the film has grossed approximately Rs.70 crore in India so far.
