Maharashtra Power-Sharing Talks: The leaders of Maharashtra’s ruling alliance, including Caretaker Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Devendra Fadnavis, and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Ajit Pawar, are set to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah today in New Delhi. The meeting will focus on finalizing the power-sharing formula for the next Mahayuti (grand alliance) government in Maharashtra.

Shinde’s Support to BJP Leadership

The meeting comes after a significant development where Chief Minister Eknath Shinde stated that he and his party would support the BJP’s decision regarding the next chief minister. By making this announcement, Shinde has cleared the way for Devendra Fadnavis to take over as the next Chief Minister of Maharashtra. In the recent state elections, the Mahayuti alliance secured 230 seats out of 288. The BJP alone won 132 seats, while Shinde's Shiv Sena bagged 57 seats and Ajit Pawar’s NCP secured 41 seats.

Expected Oath Ceremony on December 2

The swearing-in of the new government is expected to take place on December 2. However, the meeting today with Amit Shah is seen as crucial to finalizing the power-sharing arrangement among the coalition partners. Reports indicate that the formal announcement regarding the new chief minister is likely to follow after the BJP legislature party’s leader is elected in Mumbai on Friday.

Government Structure and Ministry Distribution

The new government is likely to continue with the same structure as before, which includes two deputy chief ministers. In the previous government, Eknath Shinde had two deputies: Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar. The meeting with Amit Shah will also discuss the allocation of 43 ministries among the alliance partners. According to reports, the BJP, which won a majority of seats, is expected to get 22 ministerial positions, including the chief minister’s post. The Shinde-led Shiv Sena is expected to receive 12 ministries, while Ajit Pawar’s NCP may get nine cabinet berths.

Reason for Delay in Oath Ceremony

The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for Monday, December 2, to avoid clashing with important national events. The winter session of Parliament will be held in New Delhi from November 29 to December 1, and the DG-IG conference will take place in Bhubaneswar during the same period. Additionally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in Bhubaneswar on November 29 for a roadshow. Reports suggest that PM Modi and other senior BJP leaders, along with representatives from the NDA, will attend the oath-taking ceremony on Monday.
