Who is Colonel Sophia Qureshi?

Colonel Sophia Qureshi serves in the Indian Army’s Corps of Signals. At 35, she already has a list of achievements. In 2016, she became the first woman to lead an Indian Army contingent at a multinational military exercise — Exercise Force 18, held in Pune. She led a 40-member team focusing on peacekeeping and humanitarian missions.

Her leadership stood out among 18 nations, including countries like the US, Japan, China, and Russia. Colonel Qureshi was the only woman officer leading a contingent, selected from among India’s best peacekeeping trainers.

She served as a military observer in the UN Peacekeeping Mission in Congo in 2006 and has worked in peacekeeping roles since 2010. Her experience makes her a role model for women in the armed forces.

Colonel Qureshi comes from a family of soldiers. Her grandfather was in the army, and her husband serves in the Mechanised Infantry. Her personal and professional life both reflect deep military values.
