Analysts Were Surprised by the Success
Before its release, experts thought the movie would make around $60 million. Later, they increased the guess to $100 million. Still, the final numbers shocked everyone. The film even beat the previous top opening of the year, Captain America: Brave New World, which made $88.5 million.
Why Did the Movie Do So Well?
According to box office experts, many teenagers and college students were on spring break during the movie’s release. This helped bring large audiences to theaters.
Also, while the movie’s trailers got mixed reactions, the film attracted people of all ages. It didn’t rely on critic reviews but won over fans of the game and families.
Minecraft Sets New Record for Video Game Movies
Minecraft Movie now holds the record for the biggest opening weekend for a video game-based movie in the US. It beat other successful films like The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($146 million), Five Nights at Freddy’s ($80 million), and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 ($72 million).
Experts say the video game genre is becoming a favorite among audiences, especially when the movies are PG-rated, making them family-friendly.
Good News for the Film Industry
The movie’s success brings fresh energy to theaters. In early 2025, movie earnings were down 13%. Thanks to Minecraft, that drop has improved to 5%.
The first few months of 2025 had few big hits, making it a slow season. But things might improve with big movies like Marvel’s Thunderbolts in May, Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning later that month, and F1 in June.
Experts are hopeful that the second quarter of 2025 will bring more success to theaters.
