Mumbai Drug Bust: DRI Seizes Drugs Worth Rs.24 Crore, Arrests Five
The Mumbai Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has successfully uncovered a smuggling operation involving 16 kg of mephedrone, a synthetic stimulant, valued at over Rs.24 crore. Along with the drugs, Rs.1.93 crore in cash was also seized, and five individuals have been arrested, according to officials.
The Operation
The DRI's Mumbai zonal team launched an investigation based on intelligence inputs about two suspects involved in drug smuggling. Acting on the tip-off, officials intercepted the suspects on December 3 while they were traveling on a bus from Hyderabad to Mumbai.
Upon searching their luggage, officers discovered 16 kg of a powdered substance. Subsequent testing confirmed it was mephedrone.
Further Arrests and Cash Recovery
Interrogation of the two suspects led the DRI to three more individuals, including a middleman and a receiver of the contraband. The team recovered Rs.1.93 crore in cash from these additional suspects.
Legal Action
All five accused have been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. They are currently in custody as the investigation continues.
