Mumbai on Red Alert: Schools Shut, Transport Hit Amid Heavy Rains

Mumbai on Red Alert: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai and Raigad, warning of intense rainfall with wind speeds reaching up to 65 kmph. This is the second consecutive day of a red alert in the city. In response, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared a holiday for schools and colleges across Mumbai and its suburbs.

Heavy Rainfall Impact

Since early Monday, Mumbai has been lashed by continuous downpours, recording over 500 mm of rain within 84 hours. Key areas like Chembur, Dadar, Hindmata, Andheri, and King’s Circle were submerged, once again raising questions about the city’s flood management system despite crores spent on upgraded drainage and stormwater projects.

Tragic Incidents Reported

The relentless rains have claimed lives as well. On Monday, a man lost his life after a wall collapse at Napean Sea Road, while another died due to electrocution in Kanjurmarg. A man who ventured into the Mithi River is still missing, and one person sustained injuries after a tree fall in Sahar.

Transport Chaos in City

Mumbai’s transport network has been thrown into disarray. Road traffic slowed drastically in several areas, while train services on the Central, Harbour, and Western lines faced major disruptions, with some running an hour late. Air travel also suffered as poor visibility and heavy rain forced at least 10 flights into go-arounds and one diversion.

Exams and Schools Affected

Amid the chaos, Mumbai University has postponed 32 examinations scheduled for today, rescheduling them to August 23. Meanwhile, schools and colleges in Navi Mumbai, Thane, Mira Bhayandar, and Palghar also remain closed as a precautionary measure.

BMC’s Emergency Response

To tackle severe waterlogging, the BMC has deployed engineers, pump operators, and emergency teams across flood-prone zones. Despite preparedness, civic authorities are under mounting pressure to prevent further crises as rains continue.

City Braces for More

With forecasts predicting more heavy rainfall, Mumbai is gearing up for continued disruption. This is the city’s most severe monsoon warning this season. Authorities have urged residents to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary, while emergency helplines (1916) remain active to assist citizens.
