Mumbai Rains: IMD Issues Red Alert After 100 mm Rainfall

Mumbai witnessed another day of relentless rain as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red nowcast warning for the city and nearby districts. With Colaba recording over 100 mm rainfall in 24 hours, several areas were left waterlogged, bringing traffic to a crawl.

Mumbai Rains Disrupt Traffic as IMD Issues Red Alert for 3 Hours

Mumbai Rains: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) sounded a red nowcast warning for Mumbai at 8:30 am on Monday. The alert mentioned intense to very intense rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds likely to lash Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad over the next three hours.

Heavy Rainfall Data

For the second straight day, Mumbai woke up to heavy showers. The Colaba observatory recorded 134.4 mm of rainfall in 24 hours till Monday morning, while Santacruz registered 73.2 mm. Bandra received 82 mm, Byculla 73 mm, Tata Power 70.5 mm, and Juhu 45 mm of rainfall.

BMC Records Showers

BMC data confirmed that the island city division bore the heaviest brunt with an average of over 100 mm rainfall. Automatic weather stations recorded 111.19 mm in the city division, 76.46 mm in the eastern suburbs, and 74.15 mm in the western suburbs between Sunday and Monday morning.

Orange Alert Earlier

Before issuing the red alert, IMD had already upgraded its advisory from yellow to orange for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Raigad districts. The orange alert will remain in place until Tuesday morning, after which no further warnings have been issued so far.

Traffic Snarls Reported

Incessant showers overnight caused waterlogging across several pockets, disrupting office-hour traffic. The Andheri subway had to be closed due to flooding, and traffic was diverted via Gokhale Bridge. At Khar Subway, water levels reached half a foot, while Panbai School’s slip road reported one foot of water.

Weekend Downpour

The fresh spell came after a wet weekend, with Santacruz recording 87 mm rainfall between Saturday and Sunday, while Colaba received 19.4 mm. Despite September being the driest monsoon month with an average of 360 mm, this year’s showers have been far more intense.
