This Dhanteras, the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) reported a massive boost in retail sales across India, with transactions reaching an estimated Rs. 60,000 crore. The festival, which marks the beginning of the five-day Diwali celebration, brought significant demand for various items, especially gold and silver, traditionally considered auspicious purchases on this day.

High Demand for Gold and Silver Items

The CAIT's General Secretary and Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Chandni Chowk, Praveen Khandelwal, noted a remarkable surge in demand for gold and silver. Despite rising prices leading to slightly lighter purchases by weight, sales saw substantial growth in monetary terms. According to CAIT’s All India Jewelers and Goldsmith Federation (AIJGF) national president, Pankaj Arora, approximately 25 tons of gold, valued around Rs. 20,000 crore, and 250 tons of silver, valued around Rs. 2,500 crore, were sold nationwide. There was also a noticeable rise in demand for old silver coins, priced between Rs. 1,200 and Rs. 1,300 each.

Key Markets Witness Surge in Delhi

In Delhi, several prominent retail markets reported increased footfall and sales on Dhanteras. Some of the busiest markets included Chandni Chowk, Dariba Kalan, Sadar Bazaar, Kamla Nagar, Ashok Vihar, Model Town, Pitampura, Paschim Vihar, Rohini, Rajouri Garden, Dwarka, Janakpuri, South Extension, Greater Kailash, Green Park, Lajpat Nagar, Kalkaji, Preet Vihar, Shahdara, and Laxmi Nagar. These areas saw shoppers buying not just gold and silver but also items like utensils and broomsticks, which are believed to bring good luck and prosperity.

Significance of Dhanteras Purchases

Dhanteras, also known as Dhanatrayodashi, is a day dedicated to seeking blessings from Lord Kubera, Goddess Lakshmi, and Lord Dhanvantari for wealth and health. Buying gold, silver, and specific household items like utensils is seen as highly auspicious. However, there are certain items people traditionally avoid buying on Dhanteras, such as glassware, sharp objects, and items made from iron, as they are considered to attract negative energy on this special day.

What to Avoid on Dhanteras

While Dhanteras is a day for welcoming prosperity, it is also advised to refrain from purchasing items like plastic, black-colored objects, and leather goods to keep negativity at bay. By sticking to traditional items like gold, silver, and even broomsticks, many believe they can attract fortune, prosperity, and harmony for the coming year.
