India’s javelin icon Neeraj Chopra is currently concentrating on rehabilitation after suffering a back injury just before the World Championships last September. According to the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), the priority right now is full recovery, not rushing into the new season.

Season Yet Unclear

AFI officials said Chopra has not finalised when or where he will begin his 2026 campaign. With multiple injuries to manage, the Olympic medallist has opted to take a break and allow his body adequate time to heal.

Grit At Worlds

Despite carrying an injury, Chopra competed at the World Championships in Tokyo in September 2025, finishing eighth with a best throw of 84.03m. The result was well below his personal and season-best of 90.23m, but AFI officials praised his courage for competing against medical advice.

Silent Fighter

Former AFI president Adille Sumariwalla lauded Chopra’s attitude, highlighting how the athlete never blamed injury for his performance. He described Chopra as a rare sportsperson who lets his actions speak louder than words, despite being among India’s most decorated athletes.

Past Season Pattern

In recent years, Chopra has usually started his season with international meets. Last year, he opened in April with a low-key event in South Africa before peaking at the Diamond League in Doha, while in 2024, his first appearance also came at the Doha leg in May.

Personal Milestones

Away from the field, Chopra recently shared moments from his wedding reception held in his home state. He married former tennis player Himani Mor in a private ceremony earlier this year, marking a special personal chapter.

Elite Doping Pool

Chopra and fellow javelin thrower Sachin Yadav are currently the only Indians included in the Athletics Integrity Unit’s Registered Testing Pool. AFI officials explained that the list focuses on athletes most likely to qualify for major global championships.

Why Only Two

Sumariwalla clarified that the AIU independently tracks athletes it believes are strong contenders for top events. With Chopra and Yadav seen as India’s best current bets for the World Championships in Budapest later this year, they remain under closer monitoring.

Yadav’s Rise

Sachin Yadav impressed at the Tokyo World Championships, finishing fourth with a throw of 86.27m, even outperforming Chopra on the day, further justifying his inclusion in the elite testing pool.

Asian Games Rules

AFI has announced qualifying standards for the Asian Games in Japan, making participation in state meets or AFI-organised events mandatory for selection, unless special permission is granted.

Final Domestic Event

The National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar from July 8 to 12 will be the last major domestic competition before the Asian Games begin on September 19.

Likely Exemption

AFI indicated that Chopra may be exempted from domestic competition requirements, as he is expected to compete in high-profile international events like the Diamond League series.

Rules For Others

While exceptions may apply to Chopra, AFI made it clear that all other athletes must seek approval if they skip domestic events, with the final decision resting with the selection committee.
