Hong Kong reports highest infection levels in a year
In Hong Kong, the number of people testing positive for Covid has reached its highest in a year. According to Albert Au, a top official from the Centre for Health Protection, Covid levels are now "quite high" in the city. Hospitalizations and deaths from Covid have also increased, with 31 severe cases reported in the week ending May 3.
The virus is also being detected in sewage water, showing that it is widely circulating in the population of over 7 million. Health experts warn that the city is seeing clear signs of active spread.
Singapore sees a 28% rise in Covid cases
Singapore is also on alert. The Ministry of Health reported that Covid infections rose by 28% in just one week, with over 14,000 new cases reported by May 3. Hospital admissions due to Covid also went up by about 30%. Singapore only shares updates when there is a major rise, which shows this wave is significant.
Health officials believe the rise may be due to waning immunity, but they say the variants are not more dangerous than previous ones.
Covid still a threat during summer
Usually, respiratory illnesses spread more in colder months. However, this new wave is happening even as summer begins, showing that Covid can still infect many people in hot weather.
Other parts of Asia also affected
In China, Covid positivity rates in hospitals have more than doubled, and a new wave may reach last year's summer peak.
In Thailand, there were two outbreak clusters after the Songkran festival in April, which draws big crowds.
Popular Hong Kong singer Eason Chan had to cancel concerts in Taiwan after testing positive.
Authorities urge people to stay protected
Governments are asking people to get vaccinated, especially those in high-risk groups. Booster shots are strongly recommended to prevent severe illness.
